Totò, an orphan raised with boundless optimism by a kind old woman who found him in her cabbage patch, is cast out into the cold Milanese winter after her death and settles among the poor in a shantytown on the city's outskirts. His cheerful presence transforms the ramshackle settlement into a real, thriving community, until wealthy businessmen scheming to buy the land threaten to evict everyone. Vittorio De Sica's neorealist fable tips into magical whimsy as Totò's found family fights, with the help of a literal miracle, to keep their makeshift home.
