Orson Welles's adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy follows the Moorish general Othello as his ensign Iago, embittered at being passed over for promotion, methodically poisons his mind with false suspicions about his wife Desdemona's fidelity. Shot over three grueling years across Morocco, Venice, and Italy on a shoestring budget, the film compresses the play's jealousy and manipulation into a lean, shadow-drenched fever dream. Welles frames the tragedy with Othello and Desdemona's funeral, building the entire film as a flashback toward its already-known, devastating conclusion.
