Returning from military service to his impoverished southern Italian hometown, young Antonio Catalano struggles to support his widowed mother and five sisters while courting Carmela, whose father won't allow marriage without money neither family has. Antonio cycles through one failed scheme after another, from a doomed bus cooperative to secret night work for a communist group that costs him his job as church sacristan. Renato Castellani's neorealist comedy-drama finds stubborn hope in Antonio's refusal to give up on love or dignity despite postwar Italy's grinding poverty.
