Naive provincial student Charles moves to Paris to live with his decadent, indifferent cousin Paul while both attend law school, and quickly falls for the alluring, promiscuous Florence from Paul's social circle. As Charles studies dutifully and Paul drifts through parties and idle seduction, Paul works, consciously or not, to undermine Charles's romance and pull Florence back into his own orbit. Claude Chabrol's drama pits innocence against decadence, building toward a devastating collision between the cousins' opposite ways of living.
